Cheap airfares to India

Airfares tend to be a huge part of the cost of India vacations - especially if you are traveling as a family during the peak travel season.

Below are some websites to check for fares

  1. https://www.skyscanner.com (Try the default country (US); and then try changing the country to India or other countries of your choice)
  2. https://skiplagged.com
  3. https://www.hipmunk.com
  4. https://www.momondo.com
  5. https://www.kayak.com/
  6. https://www.google.com/flights (the flexible search options are very useful; example - you can search for a fare from BLR to any city in the US)
  7. https://www.cheapoair.com
  8. https://www.indianeagle.com/
  9. Popular travel websites (Travelocity, Priceline, etc)
  10. Popular airline websites (BA, Lufthansa, Singapore Air, etc) - just in case you get lucky.
Here are some tips to try get the best fares.
  1. You may have to try a for a few days before you are able to get a good price.
  2. Avoid buying from a shady online travel agent. Changes/cancellations become very tricky or expensive. Carefully read any extra fees that may tag on, before you buy. Also, check online reviews of any online travel site that you aren't familiar with
  3. Sometimes, buying two one-way tickets is going to be cheaper than buying a round trip. So, check for both. Similarly, buying a multi-city trip itinerary could be sometimes cheaper than a round trip
  4. The price varies quite a bit depending on when you buy. Buying on the weekend tends to be a bit cheaper than weekdays.
  5. If you have the BA credit card, you can get a 10% discount on their fares
  6. If you have sufficient airline points, that could be another option
Needless to say - getting the best price could take some time & effort :(

Review: WatchIndia.tv set top box

Options to watch Indian TV channels used to be somewhat limited in the US (especially for regional-language channels). Sometime ago I came across http://www.watchindia.tv/  , but never had a chance to try it out. Finally, I decided to give it a try & ordered their set-top box (I got the newer version with HDMI output & WiFi support). My experience so far has been pretty good... The device is slightly larger than the size of a wireless-router Setup of the device was pretty easy. It came pre-configured to log-in with my watchIndia account Video/audio quality is reasonably good (I use a wired ethernet connection). The video quality reminds me of an average quality SD channel (or a video-cassette). The picture does have some pixelation, but I found it to be tolerable. Check out the pictures below. The overall UI has some constraints, but it is not horrible (the UI does have some latency, but it's not too bad) The remote is OK; most of the buttons don't seem to be fun
